Q – Hello Tony and John!

There are a lot of balls out there which are good for dry lanes. I really need a ball for dry lanes that has a good weight block for more carry. Which ball do you guys use for dry lanes and is it better to use urethane for dry lanes instead of reactive resin. Thanks for the tip!!!

A – You are correct, there are many to choose from. This is really going to depend on how dry. If you are talking about a Saturday morning where the lanes were not oiled from Friday’s leagues and after the youth group has bowled, then you may want a plastic bowling ball. However, you are probably referring to at least a little oil on the lanes, in which case my go to bowling ball is still a Brunswick Slingshot.

Q – I bowl with an ebonite cyclone but i am looking for a bowling ball with more hook on the back end. what ball will be good? My average is a 150, I bowl on Medium oiled lanes, and my speed is medium. I also bowl with a Brunswick Slingshot

A – I’m sorry I could not give you credit. I know your email address is SeeNoEvil… but there was no name for me to put in our show.
As for your question, I would like to talk about our Perfect Scale®. The Perfect Scale® can be used to compare the hook ratings of several bowling balls from all manufacturers. For example, the Cyclone is listed at 167.20, so you are going to want something a little higher. The slingshot is also a great bowling ball, and rates 157.60.

You can sort the bowling balls on bowlingball.com, by perfect scale. For example, from high to low, or low to high. And then start to decide how much hook you want. There are many other factors, do you prefer asymmetric, or symmetric cores? Solid, Pearl, or Hybrid coverstocks?
My (John Congdon) personal suggestions would be any of these. Roto Grip Critical Theory, Brunswick Nexus f(P) Pearl, or the soon to be released DV8 Hell Raiser Revenge.

Q – How do I adjust to longer and shorter oil patterns. I know the difference between them but I would like your thoughts on how to adjust.
A – James thank you for your question and your support of our show, we really appreciate it.
Outside of the obvious answer of making sure the ball you are throwing matches up to the condition you are bowling on, you can try any of the following on these oil patterns:

1. Adjust where you are looking on the lane. For a shorter oil pattern where your ball will want to start to hook sooner adjust your target further down the lane. This will create more projection and usually a little more ball speed. For the longer patterns, do the opposite, bring your target closer to you to assist in getting the ball down on the lane quicker and giving the ball more time to read the oil pattern.
2. Adjust your hand/wrist position. Flattening your hand out on the shorter pattern will create less hook and assist in getting the ball down the lane. On the longer pattern try and cup your wrist more and get the ball rolling mor off your hand to create more roll and hopefully turning into more movement on that pattern.
3. You can also play around with adjusting your starting position on the approach. Moving up for some people causes them to slow down their approach and that translates into slower ball speed giving your ball more time to hook. Moving back on the shorter pattern can adjust your approach and ball speed upwards creating moe length.

Q – I use a 16lbs bowling ball when i bowl. what is the different between a 15lbs and a 16lbs bowling ball when it comes to bowling?

A – We receive questions like this quite often. The truth of the matter is back in the day (say pre 2000), you wanted a heavier bowling ball that could provide more driving power into the pin deck. However, with today’s technology, they are finding out that it is not the complete story. You still want the heaviest bowling ball you can control, but you don’t have to have a 16# bowling ball to succeed.

Nowadays, you can change your bowling ball weight to also help you change your speed. I don’t know how advisable this is, but it may work for some bowlers.

Q – hello. my name is Zack. i throw 14 &15 pounds, about 16 mph with higher revs. i have a 5 step approach and start at the very back dots of the approach. i average 182, i was wondering if i could get more accuracy my moving up. or maybe going to a 4 step approach? Or do you have any other tips on becoming more accurate?

A – Accuracy will not be judged by where you are starting on the lane per se. Accuracy is mainly influenced by consistency and balance at the foul line. As long as you are walking the same way consistently, aren’t too jerky in your movements, follow through, and stay balanced at the line, you should have good accuracy.

Going from a 182 average up to 200’s is not an easy task. I stayed in the 180’s for a few years, which was a bummer because I work for bowlingball.com. I “should” be a better bowler.

The true secret in moving above a 180 average bowler is to make your spares. I bet you are leaving at least one open frame every game, causing your average to be in the 180’s. That was my problem. Practice your spare shooting and watch your average increase.

Don’t worry too heavily about a 4 or 5 step approach. Be comfortable with one for now. Changing from one to the other can have negative side effects.

Q – I am wonder what happens to your bowling balls if you leave it in your truck in cold weather and hot weather. Thank you very much for your time.

A- You’re welcome for our time. :)
The worst case scenario is that your bowling ball will crack in half. Bowling balls are made of multiple pieces, from the inner core and/or outer core to the coverstock. As these pieces heat and cool, they may expand and contract. Because these materials have different coefficients of expansion they could cause the ball to crack.

This is limited to being outside in extreme environments. I have had this happen to a bowling ball that was just sitting in a closet of an unused bedroom. However, outside temperatures can fluctuate more easily, causing cracking to happen.

The other scenario is that ball may “leak” oil from the coverstock if it is a reactive type material ball. In this case the pores on the cover open up from the heat and the oil that has soaked into the shell starts to bleed out.

Q – What’s the importance of releasing the ball at or around the foul line over lofting?

A – There is no importance of it really. The importance is only in your consistency in doing either of them. Or using each method when necessary. Lofting will help you overcome hooking too early. While a smooth release onto the surface may be more repeatable. In the end, consistency always wins. If you can repeat shots, and make minor adjustments, your game will improve.

Talk Bowling #99 – Should I Insert My Thumb All The Way Into The Bowling Ball?

Q – Hi,
I just started bowling a couple months ago and I got my own fingertip ball around 3 weeks ago. I was just wondering if the thumb should be inserted all the way in the hole or should it be around halfway past your first knuckle? Also, I think if you guys posted a slow motion of a correct release it would really help people that are started to learn how to hook like me. Thanks for all the help and keep up the good work!

A – Welcome to our sport. We hope you are enjoying it so far. Bowling is so much different when you switch from it being a fun date night or family event to bowling competitively. Most people that go just for fun want to break 100. That is a great goal for beginners, but once you start taking it seriously, your goals become higher.

To address your question, your thumb should be inserted all the way into the thumb hole. You risk injuring yourself if you don’t. You said you got your first fingertip ball, so I am hoping you got it drilled for yourself, and not just a used fingertip ball. The ball needs to fit your hand so that your thumb fits snugly and comfortably.

We may try to find a slow motion camera at some point. But for now, the way we describe the release to new bowlers is to vision yourself throwing a football underhand to a friend with a good spiral. Go get a football and try it. On the backswing, you keep your hand under and behind the ball, during release you slightly rotate your hand, and you follow through. At no point in time, does your hand get on top of the ball, nor does the back of your hand see the sky.

Talk Bowling #98 – Thumb Slug or Insert?

Q – Hi, i had a question regarding thumb slugs and thumb inserts. would u recommend a thumb slug or a insert. i have used both of them i like the insert a little better. My main problem is that on my backswing is i bend my knuckle on my thumb and it tends to stay in the ball a little longer than needed. So i just was wondering if u would recommend a slug or a insert, and also if u had any other recommendations that could help this problem i would appricaite it thanks.

A – Actually there should be little difference between the two. We should actually address your thumb problem. Bending the knuckle of your thumb is a sign that you are squeezing the ball and your thumb hole is too big or you could have too much reverse pitch. You are afraid the ball is going to come off your hand if you relax your grip.

You need to work on this. What helped me was using protecting tape. For me, this helps my thumb slide out of the bowling ball easier, but also allows me to have the thumb hole tighter. It sounds contradictory, but on the back swing there isn’t enough force for the ball to come off my thumb. During release, there is plenty of it to let your thumb come out cleanly without the need to squeeze.

I would have your thumb hole size checked along with your pitch. Pitches can be changed easily with a thumb slug so you can play around with this until you find something you like and something the solves your squeezing issue. Keeping your thumb tighter and using some kind of tape is another really good solution.

Question from Sean D: Hey guys, first I would like to say that I have recently come across your site and its great to see that there is a place to get the kind of advice you guys are giving to people. With that said I have a question. How do I begin to build an effective arsenal? I have a bunch of bowling balls in my closet, but I’m not really sure if I have any “drivers” in there(stealing the golf bag analogy). I feel like I have an” iron” or two and a few “putters”. Most of the balls I wind up with are hand-me-downs but I really want to get a couple of new pieces of my own. Right now I have the first black widow, an ultimate inferno, blue elite alien, virtual gravity, avalanche, c-system 4.5 and a mission. The only balls I got new are the first 3 and I only really use the first two. All the others I have either not thrown or have been unimpressed by them. Some of that may be my fault since I usually just plug the thumb on the hand-me-downs and just bowl over the original layout, but I really feel like I don’t have very many options on some league nights since I only bring and use my widow and inferno. Where do I go from here? Do I invest in redrilling some of those balls I have and get new stuff, or just scrap the stuff in my closet and start fresh? Thanks. Sean D.

A – Well there’s a lot to discuss here. Let’s start with the golf analogy. While it is a very good one, you have to be careful to not take it too literally. Yes, everyone hits their driver further than there 5 iron (hopefully). However, in bowling the “driver” could very different for each person. Actually your “driver” could be different bowling balls depending on the lane conditions. Long story short, there isn’t a single best answer. Many people are going to say your Virtual Gravity is the best “driver” out there.

That being said, unless the people you received the hand-me-downs from have the same Positive Axis Point (PAP) as you, the ball will roll differently than what the drilling was meant for.

Arsenals can vary depending on your goals. Are you just bowling league? Then you may only have one arsenal. Are you going to bowl tournaments? You may have different arsenals based on the expected lane conditions. Or you can just take all of your bowling balls to every tournament, which may be overkill.

My suggestion, make sure the layouts and your bowling balls match to your game. If not, plug and redrill. It looks like all of your bowling balls are very aggressive. You may want to consider some more mid range for when the lanes are drier, or the lanes break down. Consider some of these: Brunswick Slingshot, Roto Grip Bandit, Brunswick Lethal Revolver, Some of the Tropical Storms, DV8 Misfit.

Talk Bowling #96 – Can A Wrist Device Help Keep A Wrist Straight?

Q – Hi John and Tony,

I know that there are many wrist devices available to bowlers these days. Most of them seem to offer support for the wrist/forearm and some also provide assistance with getting the wrist/hand into a cupped position (in varying degrees).

However, I’ve no problem cupping the ball. I find that my difficulty lies in keeping my wrist neutral unless I am really concentrating on doing so. Is there a wrist device out there that will keep my wrist/hand from assuming the cupped position?

A – Great question. As you know, most bowlers have the opposite problem, keeping their wrist cupped. The adjustable wrist supports usually have a strap that go around the palm of your hand to help hold it to the support. This should help hold your wrist straight when you flatten the device out.

This also helps you find middle ground in your cupping too. You have more than just cupped or flat, but maybe you need something in between. The Brunswick PowerKoil is a great option, and there are many others as well.

For this type of concern, you will definitely need a support that goes up the back of your hand, and not just around the wrist or forearm.

Talk Bowling #95 – Sharing Equipment In League/Tournament Play

Q – Hi my brother and I just got the Vise IT in our equipment. The cool thing about it is that we both have the same pitch, span, and fingers. The only thing is that he had a larger thumb than me. My questions is during League or Tournament is it OK that we can use each others bowling balls or even the same one during the competition.

A – I am glad that you are happy with the Vise IT. For those that do now know, IT stands for Interchangeable Thumb, and is Vise’s system to let you have the same thumb hole feel in every ball. It is similar to the Turbo Switch Grip. We are proponents of these systems, as it is very important to have the same feel from ball to ball. And this is one way of achieving that. If you have us drill your new bowling ball, we can install either the Vise IT, or the Turbo Switch Grip for you.

You can also have multiple inserts made so that instead of adding tape, you can just change the insert, especially if your thumb swells and/or shrinks a lot during competition.

The only reason we don’t use one of these systems is because of we would end up wasting quite a bit of the inner pieces. Since we shoot a video for so many different balls, it is cheaper for us to use a thumb mold. Putting the inner pieces in for just a video shoot doesn’t make sense for us.

As for your competition question, there is nothing in the rule book that prohibits multiple people from using the same equipment. You will only annoy the people you are bowling with/against if it ends up causing a delay in the game because you are waiting for the ball to return.

Q – Hi. I am in somewhat of a dilemma. I bowl in leagues year round and i also have started bowling in tournaments. On a recent trip to my state USBC tourney I found myself in a bad spot. My equipment was too agressive for the drier lane conditions. I have a Brunswick C(system)alpha max, Track 715T, and Track 718A and a plastic. My question is what ball would be a good choice? I have been doing some research online and its looking like maybe a Hammer vibe, Columbia freeze, Track 300C,and Brunswick Slingshot. Could you help me please? I have heard that after the 300C gets a few games on it, it starts to hook more(which i dont want to happen). I love the Track equipment. But, I am not locked into only having Track. If there is any advice you may have it would be very much appreciated.

A – Hi Rick, it does appear that all of your equipment is aggressive, and meant to have some oil underneath it. You are looking in the right area for a bowling ball that will fit into your arsenal. Relating this to golf, your bag has a driver a couple of fairway woods, and a putter. You need some irons and wedges in that bag.

From my (John Congdon) personal experience, I really like the Slingshot and the new Roto Grip Bandit for this spot in the arsenal.

There is nothing more frustrating than dry lanes where all of your equipment is too strong.
